La parola "Derby" è molto utilizzata nell'Ippica ma il riferimento calcistico deriva dalla sfida risalente ai primi del 700 organizzata il martedi Grasso nella città di Derby (Ing) tra le parrocchie di All Saints e Saint Peter.
